it’s gardening season! please don’t plant lettuces/greens directly into the ground in an urban area or close to a building without getting a soil test. the risk of lead poisoning is very high. if you can’t afford a soil test and you must plant into the ground, try to grow something where you will only be eating the fruit and not the leaves & stems (i.e. tomatoes, cucumbers, etc) bc there’s less of a chance that heavy metals will migrate to the fruit tissues. better yet, build a raised bed or plant in pots!

Wow, I had no idea - thank you.

cooldudebro

this is a good hole and i would like to lurk in it

oculoslux

That’s Carlsbad caverns. Hope you like bats and birds.

cooldudebro

i do, i would like to crouch amongst the bats and birds

dragonsintheattic

There is a lot of space to crouch there, and for that matter to stand and stretch out if you should wish to do so (lurking by standing up tall near to a stalagmite is effective).

One of my favourite places in the world.

True fact: My husband proposed to me in Carlsbad Caverns (actually in the cave, not at the entrance here.) I later told him that he was really brave, since we were a 30 minute walk back to the entrance; it would have been reeeeeal awkward if I said no. Lololol.

hubbabubba-overlord

This would be a wicked cart track. But fuck walking back up.

fandomsandfeminism

Most people dont. There’s an elevator in one of the “rooms.” That most people use to get back up.

mrsrhettbutler

Is it an “only in America” thing where an elevator is built into a cavern so people don’t need to walk out?

fandomsandfeminism

Its to make it wheelchair accessible. As a national park, they have an obligation to make at least part of the caverns ADA compliant.

omgsomeonesomewhereonearth

It’s also perfectly possible a person gets injured down there and their peers don’t want to leave them in the dark cave for thirty minutes while they go find help.

fandomsandfeminism

The main loop at least, is heavily trafficked and well lit. But that also means that people of all fitness and ability levels can walk it and many many many do. And yes, as you say, if someone twists an ankle, or gets faint, or has some other kind of medical issue, its a lot easier and faster for the rangers to get them back to the surface with the elevator than trying to navigate the natural entrance with a stretcher.
